Alfonso Ossorio (1916 – 1990)
Splendid House

Date: 1961 (dated on the verso)
Medium: Oil, shells, starfish, coral, acrylic beads, artificial eyes, acrylic gemstones, rocks, feather, glass, rope, nails, chain and resin on Masonite in artist’s frame
Dimensions: 77.4 x 138.1 cm ( 30 1/2 x 54 3/8″) including the frame; note Christie’s assessment of the dimensions, as follows: “As the work is in an artist’s frame, we consider the frame to be part of the work so the unframed dimensions aren’t applicable.”
Condition: The work is structurally sound. A layer of dust is to the elements. A few small cracks are to the resin. A few superficial losses are to the center gold element and to the far right gold element. Cracking with associated consolidation is to the yellow orbs and a loss is to a yellow orb near the lower center edge. There is no apparent inpainting visible under ultraviolet light.” – Christie’s, June, 2021
Provenance: Obtained in trade directly from the artist in 1986 at his Hamptons estate. At some (unknown) time prior to that, judging by the gallery label on the verso (see below), Ossorio must have consigned the piece to Galerie Stadler, Paris.
Exhibition History: Christie’s exhibition, “Out East”, Southampton, NY, June 20– July 11, 2021
Price: Upon request
